I was wondering if i could take my pre-made box,rip the carpet off then fibreglass it.i coated the inside with resin and it makes a glassy layer.

If i just keep coating the box with resin on the outside til its thick then sand and spray it will it look like those custom fibreglass boxes???or do i need someting else besides resin and hardner??
menikmati
i am sure u can do that but ur box will be ALOT more heavier

and with most fiberglass boxes have alot of wood anyway for the bak and shit
Liv3vil
Well I made a sub box from fiberglass and yea used resin but also fiberglass mat and ofcource hardner but to get it nice and smooth i used some body filler but its Loads of sanding im not even done yet so i think that youll need some bodyfiller

I think if you just use some body filler and sand it down then spray youll get the look that you're going for here is a pic of the box

Just bare in mind that this was the first try(and yea i know the sub and amp is crapyola)

menikmati
hey that looks pretty decent!

thanks for the reply.so then i'd mix the resin with the fibreglass mat or make a coat of fibreglass mat over the resin layer??and what do i do with the bodyfiller?sorry if these are stupid questions i've never worked with these things before.btw your box looks good, that's exactly what i'm trying to get.what colour are you gonna paint it?
Liv3vil
ok well first what I did was put some fiberglass resin down and then I put down the fiberglass mat and then I used some more resin on top of the mat since the mat has to be transparent at the end of the day. But when applying the resin on top of the mat don’t paint it on dap it in till all of it is transparent then I waited for it to get hard(I think that you’ll only need one layer of fiberglass at the end since you’re only going to cover a box with it) ok after all that sand the fiberglass layer till it’s kind of smooth then I used body filler(with hardener past) and applied that and waited for it to dry then again I sanded it down that’s how far I got LOL

But like I sed I think that you only need to sand the box abit and then put some body filler on you don’t really need to use fiberglass and resin

But once again there some tricks to it you can make the body filler easier to apply by using some resin with it a mixture of 5 parts body filler with the right amount of hardener and then 1 part resin with hardener and then mix it all together and then you can paint it on but I haven’t tried this yet gonna try is on the next box(somthing like 500ml bodyfiller and then 100ml resin)think its called a milkshake lol

And as for the colour not sure yet aslo thanx for the comments on the box and truts me i was the same as you did some mad reading before i started this box

Thanks i think i'll try the 'milkshake' sound the easiest.perhaps i'll start this weekend then i'll post pics

Liv3vil
yea cool gie it a try and let me know how it goes and post pics man its always good to see hoe the work gets done
ryanidus
i bought the body filler, resin and p400 and p600 sandpaper, which the dude there suggested.
This sandpaper feels way too smooth will it work?can't start yet either cos the weather is kak.
Liv3vil
well the most of the time i used 80 grit thats about it but ill do some more reading quick tomorrow and let you know what to use but yea that could also work im not to sure LOL so try it ant see how it works

i got some 80 grit as well.the carpet is off but its impossible to sand the box because of the glue, i even tried it with an electric sander.the glue gets suck in everything.i'm thinking of just putting the 'milkshake' over the glue now.
Liv3vil
well it could work just to go over the glue but i think that it would be better if you got rid of the glue rather then just going over it

i used a candle and a cd and melted the glue then scraped it off.didn't take everything off but where i could see its really thick i took it off.put the milkshake on but it made deep grooves everywhere cos of the paintbrush.i'm goin to put another layer on which is smoother and requires less sanding.lol i almost feel like putting the carpet back on cos it sucks to drive without subs.oh yes and i have 36 grit sandpaper as well.i hope everything's done by the weekend.
Liv3vil
i also thought that the milkshake thing and the brush would leave grooves and the one thing that you should know is that it is a $h!t load of work and sanding really sucks but yea all i can also say is sanding by hand gives you better control then useing a power tool like i used a beltsander and wasnt that nice made some crappy umm..... grooves in the filler
barrys-wp
but can't u smooth off the finish with the body filler? fill all the grooves?
Liv3vil
yes he can but the thing is that he used a paint brush to put it on and then it made the grooves in the first place but i think use like a flexeble piece of plastic to apply some more over that or just sand the hell out of it till the grooves are gone

yip i'm gonna do that, just using body filler no resin.i got the sandpaper you use with water it works much better than dry sanding.

when i first started i used an electric sander and it sanded right down to the wood.i'll use a cd to put on the body filler, old cd's helped with getting the glue off too.lmao i need proper tools.
Liv3vil
haha yea tools are a must have i treid to cut a sub ring with a jigsaw and that was kinda useless then i got a router very nice tool to cut the rings with
ryanidus

here's how the box started, got it at hi-fi corp and it didn't play too bad, don't have a termlab or anything but it used to set off lots of alarms in the mall's parking.

first i removed the carpet-i sukkeled like hell,it was hectic glue.
ryanidus

i had to saw these extensions on the side off cos it wasn't the look i was going for.

after painting on the first layer of milkshake it made lotsa grooves and was impossible to sand smooth.i put another 2 layers or so of body putty on with those metal plate thingy's,sanded it with 100 then 400 then 600 grit sandpaper and sprayed it silver as a base coat.
ryanidus
i then sanded it again with 1200 sandpaper and sprayed it black

then i sprayed clear coat over it.(pics were taken with my phone at night)
ryanidus

so it was looking nice.this pic really doesn't do it justice.i put it in the car and it sounded absolutely kak, like the box was made out of corrugated iron or something.it actually sounded better when i left the mids, tweeters and coaxials to play without the subs.
my friend told me to put batting inside the box which didn't work and i took out the box, kicked it a bit and bought a new 1 which takes up all my bootspace but sounds great.it was fun chilling with the ouens, drinkin n doing this "project" but i think i'll leave the diy scene for a while.

not a problem,it really is funny.its strange tho cos i thought it would play helluva better cos the box was sealed like a mofo.as for the 'loss' of the box,its ok it was a cheap hi-fi corp box and i bought a better 1 the next morning after disappointment.lmao so much effort for nothing.

Well if there was one thing learnt, it wasn't a complete waste, and you did learn one thing, you CAN'T do diy. jumping-smiley-021.gif grinning-smiley-003.gif speechless-smiley-024.gif
