Hi

I went into radio autosonic in tokai Cape Town a couple days ago and got a quote for R3200 for a sound system.

Earthquake 12" sub
Sub box
Kicker 4" splits
JVC 4" coaxials
Grills for the speakers
Cables and installation
Not to sure on the sub (but around R1000 or less)

Is this good or can you recommend something else? I was also told that the earthquake 15" sub is not ideal
as it operates at a lower frequency and therefore is best for rock music. The 12" sub is apparently better for allround music.

Thanks

Hi this is a good quality system you are putting in. I'd go for a 10 or 12 inch sub considering the type of music you going to listen to.
What amps are you gonna have?
I have 2 Earthquake 15's in my Tazz.....and had no problems with them for the past 2 years.
PhaZZed
yo,

nice system that!

I would definitely go for a 300-400w rms 12" sub, in a NON-ported box. Then get a 4 chan 1200w amp to power that with two channels, and use the other 2 chans to power other speakers in back.

power the spilts off the front unit.

R3200.. sounds decent!

roughly:

sub + box : R700
amp : R1000
splits + coaxials : R1000 max for decent stuff, cos they 4"
installation, etc. R400.

You could assemble the system yrself and learn something too! smile.gif

good luck, let us know!
paul5186
Im going to get it hopefully installed on thursday, Im going to watch them do it so I can then learn to do it as well.

Im only going to get one amp for the moment, I can always get a mono block or something later if I feel the need. Im going to get a 4 channel 75watt RMS per channel sub. I had a choice of a 2500watt AtAudio amp but Im rather going to go for a cleaner sounding amp. They also cant get stock of the pioneer DVC 12" amp. But the earthquake one seems to be a good buy. The kicker splits are apparently the only splits that come in 4", their R650.

Im new to the audio scene so im friking excited! action-smiley-035.gif
paul5186
Yay I got my system installed yesterday

1 x Kole 4Ch amp (100Rms per channel at 2ohm and 85Rms per channel at 4ohm)
1 x Earthquake DB-12R Sub
1 x 12" Box
1 x Kicker 4" Splits
1 x JVC CS-424 4" Coaxials
1 x Audio authenicaion Amp kit
Labour

R3200

MAN does this system pump! Im sooo happy with it. The Kole amp is beautiful!
paul5186
I want to get an equalizer next month. Im going to mount it in my dashboard. Am I correct in saying that it will increase my bass as well?
PhaZZed
ah nice one bud! smile.gif

Hey bud, nice equipment! Nope, an eq is exactly what it says, u use it to get the right type of sound for ur setup or car. I would recommend it only on installs which use 2-3 amps, 2 or more subs and 6 or more mids/splits combo. Remember ur burning ur amp in, so the gains are most probably set to next to nothing, turn them up at around 24h worth of play. I would advise you to run the splits and mids on high pass, not full range and just cut some mid bass ie cut at 100-120hz, so that ur sub can pick up the slack at +12db, low set to about 50-60hz. I ran my sound setup in my ex TT like that, and it was crystal with deep clear bass!

Oh, whatch out for that rearview mirror! Mine actually popped off!
paul5186
Sorry i think I may have got the word wrong I just cant think of it now. Its similar to an equalizer but it controls ur sub and frequecy, it also increases your voltage to your sub. My system is pumping at the mo, my rearview mirror is about to fall off to, hehe the bass was sooo loud at one point it kept on makeing my friend sneeze.

Otherwise I dont want to get any more amps or subs just yet as I need the space in my car smile.gif

Thanks for the info Herr!

I think you are looking for a parametric.
paul5186
Thanks thats the word smile.gif I have two options for a parametric, either a Cotter which is way over R1000 or a atAudio which is R600 inc installation. The guy says it does the same job just as well.

don't buy any audio product that has a "max power rating" adverised on the packaging....

oh, just realised you bought already.

I like the look of the amp - I like how the cables can be hidden - looks neat.
Dangermouse
Well on the subject of eq. im studying sound and EQ will definitley increase your bass, if your sub can handle more bass.an eq is not only there to fine tune your system.its also shapes the sound going 2 ur amp and speakers.bt most importantly it cuts or boosts frequancies, desierd or undesierd, so if u want mor bass and ur sub will be able to handle mor then boost 40-300hz and ul get mor.
Bokslagter
Geez 300hz...my sub is currently on 20hz to 150hz..but that sjust me tongue.gif

Btw dangermouse..you like rezzing old threads hey ;P
Dangermouse
Well over 150hz-200hz is geting in to midrange...call it midbass. The punchy sort "hard" of bass kicks ly in the region.Up to 500hz which is realy "midrange"...Oh i only came now, old threads are intersesting
Bokslagter
True...but seeing as its a subwoofer...and I have other speakers sorting out the midrange side ;P hehe older threads are interresting sometimes...

Ja thats true...And thats why mids are so important to 6"
Bokslagter
Ye, Im thinking bout getting Vibe FLi mids though..any idea how they are?
Dangermouse
Nah, im very new to car Audio,I know a couple of things about sound tho. FLI luks very cool and its made by Vibe so thats gud.Whats the pricing lyk?
Bokslagter
no clue :<
paul5186
stealing my thread here, lol just joking. Anyway Im thinking of adding some new components. Another amp, sub, parametric and hopefully replace the back coaxials with a split system. I want a professional looking sub enclosure for my boot, how much would it cost roughly to get someone to build a boot enclosure (like in the magazines)?

Thats correct about the sub size 12" is better for all round music. The other thing is 4" splits are to small rather go for the 6" splits and leave the 4" coaxials out.4" speakers can sound as if there are a pair of tweeters. great for high end but if you dont go for 6" speakers, you might find your midrange is lacking. And remember the midrange is where most of the vocals lie.
KCi69
5" and 6" both work well man
Bokslagter
I've found that even 5" can lack a bit in the midrange department..6" is better and most of the time marginally more expensive
KCi69
I like the mids which are come as splits but with the extra multi directional tweeter on the mid itself, infinity ones look nice too
paul5186
True my mids are lacking a bit at the moment. But I bought this system so I could upgrade when I wanted. Ive decided not to get fancy with the Sub and amp enclosure in the boot as I may want to take it out from time to time. Im rather thinking of puting 6" mids in each door. What does this involve? Do thet have to cut any metal etc...?

Thanks

By the way this amp is brilliant. I dont know any other people with a Kohl Audio....hmmm
menikmati
no they wont have to cut metal. u can get a bigger spacer. thing is u might not be able to open ur window fully like with my car. my windos knocks on the magnet of speaker when i open all way. so it only doesent close by like 2 cm so it kewl
paul5186
Thanks smile.gif So what midrange speakers do you recommend? I only have one amp, would I need another? Im thinking of maybe getting a 2 channel for my sub so I have space for another in the future and running the other things off my current one.
menikmati
u cant go and get anoher sub now, u either must buy at same time or sell this one and by 2 new ones at same time.

rason for this is the coil of the one is more warn in than other and it would sound wierd

i wold recommend a set of hertz hsk 6" this are wat i am running

click click

there is link to my sound set up.

i dontahve my 6x9 anymore as they are a waiste. these hsk are pure quality, very expensive tho
paul5186
Thanks for the info. After thinking about it I probably wouldnt get another sub anyway as my bass is already killing me. Im looking for more of a quality sound rather than just bass.
menikmati
if u want quality i rate u should go for same splits as me, they pricy but well worth it!

i also gone for quality now than bass, but my bass is hectic trust me

were in cape town u from
paul5186
ok cool where did you get them from? Im in the southern subs in bergvliet. I have a kicker split system in the front but I want to add another set in the front doors and passenger doors.
menikmati
dude u cant go and just add lotsa speakers and hope to have a loud system

u need a balance, adding lots will not make it sound right

u need to have ur vocals coming from the front!
paul5186
ok so what do you recommend then? I want some decent midrange. Ive got a 4" split in the front
menikmati
well if iw as u i would safe up for a another amp, get a better set of splits up front like a 6"

and then get a nice set of 6" co axle at bak,

if u ever in milnerton area let me know and i wil meet up with u somewere and u can lsiten to my system, well tot he splits, seew at u think
paul5186
cool, thanks for your info. I'll save up and get a another amp and better splits and coaxials in August probably....hehe got lots of other things to pay
menikmati
kewl, i also got a good audio shop u can go to that did my system an will give u good price.

u can get hold of me on 0832588888
KCi69
I just acquired a set of Infinity reference 6", sounds boss at much less than the Hertz
paul5186
So I decided to go against what Ive been told lol and I got a set of DLS 6x9's to complement my coaxials. The 6x9's were out in mid to high range so they wont affect my sub too much. But god it sounds so much better now!! These DLS's kick ass!!
LeveL-G
DLS drivers are gr8, even the entry level stuff! Got a buddy that owns a full dls install except for the amps which is genesis and a nakamichi 45z cd player. His system reproduces all the freq wonderfully and his system is 8 years old!
