Okay, I've been hearing this alot lately and frankly, before last saturday, I wasn't even aware that car alarms HAD different levels.
So, could somebody kindly explain to me exactly what the difference between, say, a level 1 alarm and a level 4 alarm?
Or at least point me in the right direction where I can read up on it myself.
I've looked around and can't seem to find any reference to alarm levels online.

All i know is that level 4 is like the best you can get here in SA. and its a requirement for insurance to have a level 4 alarm.

I know that the VISA alarm systems for the cars have levels. My insurance for example require a VISA Level 4 to be fitted or it doesnt cover theft.
My Corsa has a level 3 installed as it has a factory immobiliser in the key...I recon all Insurance Companies are different!

I use to have a level 4...
Central locking, Alarm sensor, Anti-Hijack button... etc...
The top of the range system... But my Insurance Broker says it won't effect my monthly premium...
WHat's up with that?

Level 4 is the common known best system available here. Kheiron: yours sounds like a level 4 mate.
You can get higher level alarm system here though, I knew a guy who has a level 5 or 6, comes with electronic type key, with car starter, etc.
Wildcars: It depends on who the broker is though, depends how it was insured in the first place, etc.

it all depends for insurance purposes what ur policy wording says all the different insurance companies ahve different policy wording but it is imperative that u check ur policy wording even get a copy of ur policy and make sure ur broker knows that u want to be paid out when ur car is stolen and how must you go about that cos i get so many cases where "the insured" was like "but i had a gearlock" and the policy wording states gearlock and immobiliser, the broker's are just too lazy to do the work

FYI. This is the reply I got back from Autowatch when I asked them what the difference is between a level 2 and a level 4 alarm:
QUOTE
The functionality of a level 2 and a level 4 system are very similar. They are both remote controlled Alarm and immobilizer systems.
The main difference between the two systems is that the level 4 has what we call a rolling code remote which basically means that every time you press the remote it sends a different code to the system thus making the use of a code grabber impossible for the criminals to use. The level 2 system has a fixed code system.
The other main difference is in the immobilization of the vehicle. A level 2 system immobilizes 2 of the vehicles circuits whilst the level 4 immobilizes 3 making it more difficult for a thief to bypass it.
